Philoptochos
“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Acts 20:35
Who is Philoptochos?
The beginning of the Philoptochos Society can be traced back to the late 19th century when hundreds of immigrants were arriving daily into the United States. In 1931, Archbishop Athenagoras identified the urgent need to provide philanthropic and relief services to the poor and to those struggling to assimilate into the American cultural life and recognized how women could have a role in the life of the Orthodox Church. Their focus was to welcome newcomers and to help them adjust to their new environment. He established the National Philoptochos Society as the official philanthropic arm of the church. Today, Philoptochos chapters are located in every Greek Orthodox parish in the United States with 427 chapters and over 25,000 members.
